IS-ENES2_MS11.2_Web processing services: report on synergies between task 1 and 3

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Web Processing Service (WPS) protocol provides a broad inter-disciplinary standard for implementing processing services. That is, it provides a protocol whereby requests for processing activity on a server can be submitted remotely. Most users of such service will not interact with them directly, but instead go through a client which takes input from a user interface and submits requests to the WPS itself. In this configuration, the WPS protocol provides a means of maintaining a clean separation between the client handling communication with the user and the server dealing with structured processing requests. Because of the breadth of scope of the OGC WPS standard, there are many options for implementation. IS-ENES has contributed to development of 3 WPS implementations at DKRZ, KNMI and STFC. The 3 implementations are influenced by a range of differing requirements and institutional constraints. This report aims to support the development of these services and their integration into a harmonised service or bundle of servers.
