A short description of each organisation part of the project
  • 1. CNRS-IPSL

Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), is the main french research institution. CNRS acts here in the name of the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL), which is a federative institute located in Paris composed of 6 research laboratories working on global environmental and climate studies. It gathers about 750 scientists (280 researchers, 240 engineers) and represents more than a third of the national research potential in atmospheric and oceanic sciences. Main laboratories involved in IS-ENES2 are Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement, Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique and Laboratoire d’Océanographie et du Climat. One of the main objectives of IPSL is to understand climate variability, both natural and anthropogenic. IPSL has developed an Earth system model IPSLESM. IPSL is strongly involved in IPCC Working Group 1. IPSL has also been involved in several European projects such as ENSEMBLES, METAFOR, EMBRACE and coordinates ISENES1.

Tasks assigned:

Coordination of IS-ENES2 (WP1), and coordination of transversal activities: the Strategy WP2/NA1 and the Innovation WP6/NA5, and is co-leader of WP5/NA4, WP10/JRA2 and WP11/JRA3.


  • 2. Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum Gmbh (DKRZ)

Deutsches Klimarechenzentrum Gmbh (DKRZ) is a national German facility, providing state-of-the-art super-computing data service and other associated services to the German and also the international scientific community to conduct top of the line Earth System and Climate Modelling. DKRZ operates fully scalable supercomputing systems designed for and dedicated to earth system modelling. The central DKRZ system currently is a 8000 core IBM Power6 supercomputer with a peak performance of more than 150 TeraFlops. The mass storage system contains currently 16 PetaByte and has a capacity of up to 100 PetaByte. Associated services provided by DKRZ include general user support as well as specific support in scientific computing. With respect to data services DKRZ operates the ICSU World Data Center Climate with more than 550 TB fully documented climate data and field-based data access.

Tasks assigned:

DKRZ is coordinator of WP9/JRA2, contributes to WP3/NA2 by leading the task on “Best Practice Programmability” and is responsible for website and portal in NA1. Additionally DKRZ participates in the I/O task of JRA1. With respect to the data work packages DKRZ is one the major data service provides within ENES, leads the service work package WP8/SA2 and participates in networking WP5/NA4 and research WP11/JRA3.


  • 3. Centre Européen de Recherche et de Formation Avancée en Calcul Scientifique (CERFACS)

CERFACS, established in 1987 in Toulouse (France), is currently one of the world's leading research institutes working on efficient algorithms for solving large-scale scientific problems. The CERFACS Climate Modelling and Global Change team conducts basic scientific research and high-level technical developments in the field of climate studies. In particular, the team develops the OASIS coupler currently used by more than 35 climate-modelling groups in Europe and around the world. During the first IS-ENES project, significant resources were devoted to develop and offer user support for this community software. CERFACS activities in high performance computing encompass assembling high-resolution coupled climate based on state-of-art component models, porting and optimising them on a variety of platforms. CERFACS currently participates to CMIP5and one of its main scientific objectives is to make significant contributions to the understanding of the world climate variability on regional to global scales and to climate impact studies at seasonal-to-decadal time scales. CERFACS is getting also involved in building new approaches to deal with large data volumes produced in climate science together with large data centres in Europe.

Leads WP7/SA1 and WP5/NA4, co-leads WP9/JRA1, and participates also to WP4/NA3 (task “Governance of a community coupler”), WP10/JRA2 (tasks “Suite of base benchmarks” and “Evaluation of coupling strategies”), WP11/JRA3 (task “Data access services for climate impacts”).


  • 4. Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici Scarl (CMCC)

CMCC is a research center funded by the Italian Ministries of the Environment and Land Protection, of Education, University and Research, and of Economy and Finance, that aims at furthering knowledge in the field of climatic variability, including causes and consequences, through the development of high-resolution simulations and impact models. The centre gathers the know-how from its funding Institutions focusing on climate change issues and applications for environmental management. The mission of CMCC is also to encourage and foster collaboration among universities, national and international research institutions, local institutions and the industrial sector. CMCC holds an innovative supercomputing infrastructure that consists of two clusters, together reaching a peak of 30 TFlops of computing power. A high capacity and high performance storage infrastructure supports the clusters.

Tasks assigned:

CMCC will contribute to WP3/NA2, WP4/NA3, WP5/NA4, WP6/NA5, WP9/JRA1, WP10/JRA2, WP11/JRA3.


  • 5. The University of Reading (UREAD NCAS)

The National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) is one of the established centres of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), operating as a virtual centre distributed across universities and reserach institutes. UREAD-NCAS carries out research programmes on the science of climate change, including modelling and predictions; atmospheric composition, including air quality; weather, including hazardous weather, and; technologies for observing and modelling the atmosphere. UREAD-NCAS also provides scientific facilities for researchers in the UK, and elsewhere to enable excellent atmospheric science. UREAD-NCAS communicates findings and knowledge for the benefit of policy-makers, other scientists and the general public. The UREAD-NCAS staff members engaged in ISENES2 are based in the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading, who will be the legal entity delivering IS-ENES2. The Department of Meteorology at Reading is the largest in Europe with around 40 senior research and teaching staff, over 70 research staff and around 50 PhD students. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, 75% of the research was graded as world leading or internationally excellent. The Department also hosts around 30 Met Office scientists. Reading staff provides expert advice for IPCC and have led a range of international research projects and field campaigns. Key external collaborations include industrial partners such as Willis Re Insurance and the International Space Innovation Centre at Harwell in the UK.

Tasks assigned:

Along with engaging in most of the networking activities, specific tasks are: Leading NA1 - responsible for governance, strategy and training. Lead the NA2 task on next generation models and the JRA3 task on metadata services. Major engagement in JRA1 where UREAD-NCAS will be testing, evaluating, and running high resolution models based on the experience of Professor Vidale's UPSCALE PRACE project.


  • 6. Met Office (MetO)

The UK Met Office is a world's leading providers of environmental and weather-related services. Within the Met Office, the Hadley Centre focuses on global and regional climate using computer models developed by its staff. Additionally, these models are used extensively by the wider climate research community. The Hadley Centre provides in-depth information to, and advises, the UK government on climate change issues. The Met Office was a partner in the PRISM and IS-ENES1 projects and contributed to the IPCC AR5 model data base.

  • 7. Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)

The UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) hosts the British Atmospheric Data Centre (BADC) which is part of the Centre for Environmental Data Archival (CEDA). The BADC is core funded via the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS), a collaborative centre of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). CEDA supports the atmospheric science community in the UK and abroad through provision of data management and discovery services, and develops tools and services to aid data preservation, curation, discovery and visualisation. In addition to the core remit of serving the NERC's National Centre of Earth Observations (NCEO) and NCAS, CEDA is a partner in major international collaborations for two European FP7 projects, METAFOR and IS-ENES, and. has delivered major projects funded by Defra, ESA and others.

Along with engaging in most of the networking activities, specific tasks are: Major engagement in WP5/NA4 – leading the meta-data task; Major engagement in and Co-Leading WP8/SA2; Major engagement in and leading WP11/JRA3.


  • 8. Sveriges Meteorologiska Och Hydrologiska Institut (SMHI)

SMHI is a government agency under the Swedish Ministry of Environment. SMHI offers products and services that provide organisations with important environmental information to support decision-making. The main fields include weather and climate forecasts/projections, industry-specific services, simulations and analyses. SMHI has a strong R&D focus. With climate research involving all of six research sections, including the Rossby Centre that is responsible for the development and application of regional and global climate models. In particular the Rossby Centre is active in the development of ECEarth, being responsible for the development and release of EC-Earth version 3. The Rossby Centre also has extensive experience in the development and application of advanced regional climate models.

Tasks assigned:

SMHI will co-lead WP9/JRA1. SMHI will contribute to this WP through work with the ESM EC-Earth, using a coupled version at 0.25°. SMHI contributes to WP7/SA1 through the provision of community support for the use of EC-Earth. SMHI also contributes to WP11/JRA3 through expertise in CORDEX regional climate output protocols and will work with LiU on the implementation and further testing of an ESG node to support CORDEX data access and exchange. Finally SMHI contributes to WP5/NA4 and WP6/NA5 through its experience in working closely with the Impact, Adaptation and Vulnerability (IAV) communities.


  • 9. Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Institut (KNMI)

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) is the Dutch national weather service and centre for climate research. Climate research at KNMI is aimed at observing, understanding and predicting changes in the climate system. KNMI produces climate scenarios for use by stakeholders for developing adaptation and mitigation strategies. Climate research is carried out in various divisions: Global Climate Division (global climate change, coupled modelling, changes in extremes, ocean circulation, sea level rise), Regional Climate Division, Chemistry and Climate Division, Earth Observation and Climate Division and Climate Advice and Analysis Division. Climate research is supported by an Infrastructure sector in which the Research & Development division carries out innovative research.

Tasks assigned:

KNMI contributes to WP7/SA1 and WP9/JRA1 as a representant of EC-EARTH and to WP5/NA4, WP8/SA2 and WP11/JRA3 through its expertise on impact studies and data portals.


  • 10. Max Planck Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften E.V. (MPG)

Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPG), from Max Plank Gesellschaft (MPG). The overall mission of the institute is to understand how physical, chemical, and biological processes, as well as human behavior, contribute to the dynamics of the Earth system, and specifically how they relate to global and regional climate changes. MPG has made major contributions to the simulation and analysis of a human influence on climate in detection and attribution studies. MPG has developed a comprehensive Earth system model (MPI-ESM) in which the physical aspects of the climate system are coupled with biogeochemical cycles, and makes this model available to the scientific community in Europe and elsewhere. MPG is committed to informing decision-makers and the public on questions related to Climate Change and Global Change. Finally, MPG is managing the International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling, which hosts approximately 50 PhD students.

Tasks assigned:

Co-coordination of WP4/NA3, and participation to WP3/NA2 on radiation code convergence, responsibility in training school in WP2/NA1, will also be involved in post-processing developments in WP9/JRA1 and work on MPI-ESM in benchmark developments in WP10/JRA2 and in service activities in WP7/SA1.


  • 11. Climate System Analysis Group, University of Cape Town (CSAG)

The Climate System Analysis Group, CSAG, is a multi-disciplinary research group with a special focus on climate change. Central to the portfolio of activities is the intent to be relevant to the knowledge needs of developing nations. Established in 1992, CSAG now offers a unique resource in Africa on climate change, both in terms of size and capacity, and through CSAG’s role in bridging the science-society divide with tailored climate services and stakeholder support activities. The group of about 35 comprises a mix of senior scientists, post-docs, MSc and PhD students, with administrative and IT support staff, backed by the institutional support of the University. The members of CSAG have excellent national and international collaboration with formal links to a number of foreign institutions. Additionally CSAG senior personnel participate in key international activities, including leading roles within the IPCC. Dr Hewitson, along with others in the team, has developed a statistical downscaling method (SOMD) and produced statistically downscaled projections for Africa and Asia. These projections have been extremely well received by the end user community through a large number of engagements and collaborative research projects. CSAG also serves as the lead organisation for the CORDEX Africa project and brings significant experience in both dynamical modelling and statistical downscaling over Africa. Over the past 6 years CSAG has developed a strong science society interface initiative. A critical component of this initiative is the Climate Information Portal (CIP) that has been developed to deliver CMIP3 and CMIP3 statistically downscaled projections to end users through a web based, guidance text rich, interface. User experience labs involving a variety of adaptation specialists have provided critical feedback and development is ongoing with the dissemination of CORDEX based projections a primary focus of current development.

Tasks assigned:

CSAG will contribute to the interface with the impact community in WP5/NA4 and WP11/JRA3. It will also bring expertise on data distribution and metadata for CORDEX Africa in those work packages.


  • 12. The University of Manchester (UNIMAN)

The Centre for Novel Computing (CNC) is an interdisciplinary research group located in the RAE 5* rated School of Computer Science at the University of Manchester. CNC's research is application motivated with a mission to investigate techniques, and develop associated tools, for support of high performance computing. CNC aims to mediate between the increasingly challenging applications found in Computational Science and Engineering (CS&E) and the increasingly complex base technologies for high performance computing. The CNC was established in 1990 with foundation funding from the then SERC's Novel Architecture Computing Committee. To date, the Centre has been awarded around 8.5MGBP worth of research grants from the EPSRC and other UK Research Councils, the EU Framework Programmes, UK government and other sources. Its accumulated experience in the field exceeds 100 person-years.

UNIMAN will contribute to WP3/NA2, WP5/NA4, WP9/JRA1 and WP10/JRA2.


  • 13. Institutul National de Hidrologie si Gospodarire a Apelor (INHGA)

The National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management, INHGA, is the national authority in hydrology, hydrogeology and water management; develops research activities and provides operational services of national and international public interest for the protection and socio-economic well-being of people; achieves the studies regarding the hydro-climatic variability of the Danube River and the Black Sea area; provides technical assistance and scientific guidance in the following areas: hydrologic forecasts, warnings of dangerous hydrologic events, hydrologic network and for the implementation of modernization programs of the national hydrological system. Also INHGA has extensive experience in achieving researchdevelopment programs and projects managed and/or financed by the International Hydrological Program– UNESCO, Operational Hydrological Program–World Meteorological Organization (WMO), European Commission (EC), and NATO. INHGA is Romania’s representative in the hydrology domain at WMO.

Contribution to WP9/JRA1 and WP11/JRA3 on hydrology applications.


  • 14. Wageningen Universiteit (WU)

Wageningen University & Research Centre is a cluster of internationally-leading knowledge institutions offering applied and scientific research to promote the sustainable use of our environment. Research focuses on land use, water management and environment in rural and semi-urban areas and is implemented in close collaboration with stakeholders and private and public research partners. WU has a longstanding record of successfully conducting and coordinating large European projects. The Earth System Sciences and Climate Change (ESS-CC) of the Environmental Science Group of WU is expert on landatmosphere interactions, land use change and climate change and is one the leading groups on regional scale climate studies including impacts and adaptation. Issues at large scale are studied with integrated assessment models. The group conducted and coordinated more than 20 large EU project consortia during the last 10 years (WATCH, HIGHNOON, ECLISE and Amazalert are among the more recent ones).

Tasks assigned:

Contributes to WP6/NA5 Innovation work package, and in the data modules will contribute to enhance the access to climate data by the IAV community through: WP5/NA4 Data networking –organize and report on workshops with the IAV community about needs and priorities for enhanced access functionality and processing capabilities of the data portal, WP8/SA2 Data services - Implement and maintain IAV oriented processing capabilities on the data portal, WP11/JRA3 Data development: Develop IAV oriented processing capabilities and algorithms for the data portal, based on the outcome of WP5/NA4.


  • 15. Linköpings Universitet (LIU)

Linköping University (LIU) hosts one of the major HPC centres in Sweden called National Supercomputer Centre (NSC), with a staff of 25 persons, and part of SNIC (Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing). NSC has served the Swedish academic community since 1989, and provides around 150 million core hours per year to around 650 scientific users from all over Sweden through its various supercomputers. LIU has extensive experience in delivering service to the Swedish academic community and participation in international projects. LIU also delivers substantial computing resources, data storage and support to specific application groups, such as SMHI (Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute) for weather forecast and climate research. LIU is and has been active in several European projects such as ENACTS, HPC4U, IS-ENES1, EGI, PRACE 1-ip and PRACE 2-ip. Furthermore, LiU is part of SeRC (Swedish e-Science Research Centre).

  • 16. Barcelona Supercomputing Centre – Centro Nacional de Supercomputacion (BSC)

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), established in 2005, serves as the National Supercomputing Facility in Spain. The Center hosts MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputer in Europe. The mission of the BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. The BSC not only strives to become a first-class research center in supercomputing, but also in scientific fields that demand high performance computing resources such as the Life and Earth Sciences. Following this approach, the BSC has brought together a critical mass of top-notch researchers, high performance computing experts and cutting-edge supercomputing technologies in order to foster multidisciplinary scientific collaboration and innovation. The BSC has been particularly active in the 6th and 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission, and indeed the BSC is partner of the IS-ENES project.

Tasks assigned:

Contribution will be to WP3/NA2 on programmability and technology tracking and WP9/JRA1 on performance evaluation. The main BSC tasks will be related to the performance analysis of current and future ESMs on HPC environments. Focus on new programmability paradigms and analysis of unified libraries and codes is envisaged.


  • 17. Universidad de Cantabria (UC)

The University of Cantabria (UC) is one of the leading research universities in Spain. UC is a young modern public institution whose main purpose is to contribute to social progress through a firm commitment to teaching and scientific excellence. This concern has led to UC being firmly committed to quality in its work, a commitment put into practice via a process of constant review and improvement of all its teaching, research and administrative activities. This constant demand for quality means that the UC is now considered one of the ten best universities in Spain with regards to quality and scientific productivity. UC has around 15,000 students and some 2,000 staff members. Within the 31 departments of UC there are more than 100 research groups, whose research activities cover the most varied aspects of the sciences and arts, and in the fields of both fundamental and applied research. UC has been involved in the European Framework Programmes (FP) from the beginning of these actions. The UC Research Groups have participated in 27 European Projects in the Fifth FP and 16 the Sixth FP, in fields such as information society technologies, genomics and biotechnology, high energy physics, climate research, etc. UC also coordinates a Marie Curie Excellence Chair and a Specific research Project in the Information Society Technologies thematic area. Currently, UC is participating in 27 FP7 projects in different thematic areas.

UC participates to WP5/NA4 and WP11/JRA3 activities with expertise on downscaling methodologies and interface with impact communities.


  • 18. Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt EV (DLR)

The Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR) is the German national research establishment for aeronautics, astronautics, and energy technology within the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft der Forschungszentren (HGF). The Institut für Physik der Atmosphäre ( performs research in several areas that qualifies DLR for the needs of the project: large-scale, meso-scale, and micro-scale modelling of atmospheric dynamics and chemistry, in situ air-borne measurements of chemical species, aerosols, and meteorological quantities, radiative transfer modelling, and processing of satellite output. The institute has many years experience in co-ordinating and participating in research projects, including many EC funded projects (e.g., ATTICA, EMBRACE, IS-ENES).

Tasks assigned:

DLR will contribute to WP4/NA3 on elaborating the strategy on model evaluation and WP9/JRA1 on I/O and post-processing.


  • 19. Danmarks Meteorologiske Institut (DMI)

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) is the national meteorological service for Denmark, and Greenland. It has a long-lasting experience in atmospheric modelling including development, running and analysing 3D atmospheric models for both operational use and research in weather forecast, climate change and environment. DMI possesses powerful supercomputers (from Oct 2008 - Cray XT5) that allow operational and experimental weather prediction and climate simulations with high spatial resolution.

The Danish Climate Centre (DKC) at DMI involves about 40 scientists. The DKC has extensive experience in climate modelling. The DKC has been involved in many international research projects on global and regional climate modelling funded by EU, including GLIMPSE, PRUDENCE (as coordinator); ENSEMBLES, and Ice2Sea. The DKC maintains extensive archives of climate model output from the PRUDENCE and ENSEMBLES EU-projects and the CORDEX project under the WCRP. These archives are public and accessible through a simple web interface. These archives have been extensively used through several years by a large and diverse set of users dealing with climate change impacts at all scales and with economic consequences and damages. DMI intends to remain a central CORDEX archive and is working on linking this database with the software created to organize the CMIP5 global model archive.

  • 20. Fundacio Institut Català de Ciències del Clima (IC3)

The Institut Català de Ciències del Clima (Catalan Institute of Climate Sciences, IC3) is a Spanish institution funded by the Catalan government with the commitment of developing high-quality research on climate variability and its impacts. IC3 is organized in two units devoted to a) climate dynamics and impacts (UDIC) and b) climate prediction and regional climate (Climate Forecasting Unit, CFU). There are also two laboratories focused on air composition measurements and communication. Currently, 43 people work at IC3. The CFU, which is the research unit involved in this proposal, undertakes research on the development and assessment of dynamical and statistical methods for the prediction of global and regional climate on time scales ranging from a few weeks to several years. The formulation of the predictions includes the development and implementation of techniques to statistically downscale, calibrate and combine dynamical ensemble and empirical forecasts to satisfy specific user needs in the framework of the development of a climate service. Making progress in dynamical global climate modelling with a focus on climate prediction is one of the main tasks of the CFU. This implies a substantial amount of resources devoted to technical developments in the context of the EC-Earth consortium, among which there is the Autosubmit package. The CFU is leading the SPECS project, is currently involved in three

FP7 projects (QWeCI, CLIMRUN and DENFREE), as well as several nationally- and privately funded projects.

  • 21. Météo-France (MF – CNRM)

Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques (CNRM) of the French meteorological service (Météo-France) is the department responsible for conducting the largest part of the meteorological research activities, and for coordinating research/development undertakings conducted within other departments. To carry out its missions, CNRM hosts approximately 280 permanent positions (near 30% being research scientists), and about 80 post-docs, students and visitors, working in specialized divisions. The climate group « GMGEC » is one of these divisions in charge of the studies of present climate variability and of the impact of human activities on climate. Its main specific activities relative to IS-ENES concern the development, in collaboration with CERFACS and IPSL, of the Earth System Model CNRMCM that has been applied recently to the CMIP5 simulation exercise which outputs are made available to the scientific community through the CNRM-CERFACS data node of the “Earth System Grid Federation”. The climate group also develops regional climate models (variable resolution ARPEGE-Climat global model and limited area ALADIN-Climat model) that are in particular applied in the context of the CORDEX international project.

  • 22. Universitetet I Bergen (UiB)

Universitate of Bergen, UiB is the primary academic marine research organisation in Norway with key expertise in physical oceanography, climate research, biogeochemistry, ecology, paleoclimatology and meteorology. UiB has coordinated a series of EU projects in the field of climate research, among others the EU FP6 Integrated Project CARBOOCEAN and currently the EU FP7 large-scale integrating project CARBOCHANGE. UiB has participated in IPCC AR4 and IPCC special report on carbon storage. The Geophysical Institute of UiB includes the key marine carbon research group in Norway (observation and modelling). UiB and the Geophysical Institute are key participants in the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research in Bergen, a nationally funded Center of Excellence in scientific research. Within the Bjerknes Centre of Climate Research, the Geophysical Institute together with the research company Uni Research Bjerknes AS have contributed the physical and biogeochemical modules to the Norwegian Earth system model NorESM, a joint venture of research institutes in Bergen and Oslo (see also partner The Geophysical Institute and Uni Research Bjerknes AS have carried out the coupled NorESM runs for CMIP5 and have key expertise in running complex climate models on supercomputers. The Bergen Center for Computational Science at the University of Bergen and Uni Research provide and maintain the largest supercomputer facility in Norway (CRAY Hexagon).

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute ( was founded in 1866 and is a public agency. is responsible for the public weather service in Norway. R&D is related to operational numerical models of the atmospheric, oceanographic and sea-ice forecasting and environmental models that are developed and operated. Climate research ranges from modelling the global and regional climate and Earth System including scenario calculations as well as downscaling to finer resolution over Norway and adjacent seas. The institute is the western modelling centre in EMEP (European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme) under the Convention on Long Range Transport of Air Pollution (CLRTAP) and has in this capacity broad experience and international reputation in atmospheric air pollution modeling including policy applications. The research work is carried out in collaboration with national and international research institutions. is representing Norway in many international conventions (WMO, ECMWF, EUMETSAT) and is involved in a multitude of partnerships both within the operational parts as well as in R&D.

Contributes to WP7/SA1 service on NorESM and WP9/JRA1 on experiments with PRACE and on post-processing
